WHICH INTERIOR STYLE ARE YOU?
With so many trends, products and accessibility to almost anything in this world we live in today, it can sometimes be confusing to pinpoint the type of style that not only suits your home but also suits your personality. When you start to really distinguish the style you would like to choose for your interior, often most people will head straight to Pinterest and start saving away. Now some people just know, and they just get their style but for some that have a saved mix of absolutely everything then it can be overwhelming and somewhat exhausting trying to create your personalised scheme. You can become lost just by logging on!
We now also look at the consideration of the environment and how the choices we make today will affect the future generations. Will my chair that I purchase today be passed on for generations like my Great Grandmothers antiques or will it be added to landfill. These external factors can sometimes also limit us on choices and that too can be overwhelming.
Time and time again we are approached by new clients that have lost their way or are underwhelmed with their selections to date and are desperate for help by someone external to their day to day world. The most common mistake we see these clients making, is trying to follow trends and trying to blend too many of these styles together. Mixing a Hamptons style, with boho and Minimalist just does not work, however they just love bits of each of these for one reason or another. Buy putting an interior style together and then executing it in your home takes careful consideration and research even for the trained eye and just because you have fallen in love with a picture on Pinterest or in a magazine doesn’t always mean it is your style. So to combat this, when we are faced with a client that loves a bit of everything, it is about pairing it all back and focusing on first the true loves, the interior styles that you can imagine living with for years to come, what suits your home and personality and making sure you are not falling for something that will be gone as quickly as a pickle on a kids cheeseburger.
There is always an exception to the rules however, and we have recently been faced with that when entering a new clients home that literally is filled with all styles, all colours and all themes, but it just works and the reason for this is because it is suited to the client and her wonderful personality and she absolutely loves it all. It is a successful interior, and her unique style sits in an eclectic but well curated theme. A successful Interior scheme is more than just the fabric on the sofa and the art on the walls it is the homes habitants, the very people that enjoy its surroundings and the expression of personality through items.
So our suggestions to you when choosing your style is to make sure you listen to your intuition first, try not to be influenced by friends or family that have just created their own interiors or think they know what you prefer. Make sure you are happy with your decisions and when it gets too much, dissect the layers and reduce the saved pin’s so that you can truly focus on what you can imagine living with, not just the most amazing home suited to a particular Hollywood actress with an unimaginable budget. Interior trends always follow fashion trends and right now we are seeing a mix of colour blocking, vintage inspired interiors, textured fabrics, the continuation of Australian inspired homes and of course the minimalist and monochromatic interiors. There are influences from cultures, global trends, colours, fashion, styles from different generations such as the 80’s, the environment, sustainable living and so many more. We live in a world now where anything goes.
