PSA: KonMari™ Consultant Kim is Here to Save the Day (or Year)

An Organised Home

As Interior Designers, we are in the business of making sure that our clients homes look beautiful and are functional for their families or businesses, however we don’t get into the nitty gritty of sorting and making sure inside the cupboards are organised and functional. We really handover the empty space and watch our clients transform it into their homes. Of course, we make the spaces look stunning and add decorative items but making sure the Tupperware lids match the bottoms is not our thing. When really organisation is the key to a beautiful home.  Without it, the functionality of the home is compromised and well, we cannot have that. But do not fear, we have the perfect solution, Kim, at ‘An Organised Home’. She is a whizz at organisation and is spreading joy as she and her magical wand move across our state visiting homes and getting them organised. She is also Adelaide’s first certified KonMari™! We sat down with her to learn more about her organisational methods. Here is what she had to say.

Kim, tell us about your business, ’an organised home’?

’An Organised Home’ was created after many years of watching myself and those close to me battle the often-relentless family/career lifestyle. My focus with this business is to help liberate clients from clutter and disharmony in their home, and create calm, organised and simple spaces that allow them to thrive.

What inspired you to study Marie Kondo and her way of organisation as opposed to other organisation methods?

I am a third generation neat freak. It is in my blood to want a spick and span household. With a husband, 2 children, a dog and stress levels rising, I knew there had to be a better way.10 years of trying to keep on top of my household clutter, I was left drained and disheartened.

I was introduced to Marie Kondo’s tidying method through a friend.  As I worked through the process myself, the change was dramatic, the results were immediate. By the end of my KonMari™ journey, Id truly reached tidying salvation!  ‘Let Go’, ‘Spark Joy’, and ‘Everything in Its Place’, became part of my daily mantra and is now effortless ritual for my family. This way of life had to be shared. The concept of ‘An Organised Home’ was born and I was off to learn the method inside out and become a trained, certified KonMari™ Consultant.

From what we have learnt, there are key parts to the processes in the ‘KonMari’ method of organisation, those being, sort in categories not rooms, work out if something sparks joy and of course the famous folding method. Why is it important to think in this way when organising your home as opposed to just tidying room by room?

You are correct. The ones you have highlighted are some of the reasons why this system works so well. For example, we often store possessions from a single category in different locations throughout the home, take clothing for example. It's not until we consolidate these items in one place do we get an accurate grasp of just how much we own. It is when we are confronted with our belongings in this way, that we are able to determine which items truly spark joy, and therefore, which items belong in our future.

How do you place the importance of organisation in the home in our day to day lives?

There are countless studies that show clutter and disorganisation can affect our anxiety levels, sleep and our ability to focus. So, I would place huge importance on incorporating organisation into our day to day lives. It is also worth noting, that you will never know the true burden of your clutter until you release yourself from it. In other words, we may not feel the real weight of our possessions until we let go of those items that no longer serve a purpose. My role is not only to help you realise this, but to get you there too.

For those of us intimidated by hiring a personal organiser or who may think the process of hiring is going to be embarrassing or confronting, please put our minds at rest and tell us how hiring you works and what is involved.

For starters, we never receive lessons on how to tidy, and we cannot be expected to tidy if we have never learnt how. Therefore, it is unnecessary to feel ashamed about employing someone like myself. It is so common to feel embarrassed or overwhelmed at having to confront your belongings. Yes, it is intimate work, but I promise you, we will have some serious laughs along the way. My previous and current clients will all vouch for that. When I see clients for the first time, they all appear so nervous but by this point, I am already so proud of them, they have already started to make change.

I can work with clients in so many different capacities. It is not just me coming in and moving things from ‘a to b’, to make things look pretty. It is so much more than that. There are many important lessons to be shared in terms of mindset shift, self-reflection and self-transformation. I encourage anyone interested to get in touch and organise a free initial consult to better understand what is involved.

Lastly, if there were one tip you could give us to get us started what would it be?

Choose joy, always.

Well, if you, like us are always in search of a missing item or jamming items into a drawer to make it close, then head over to Kim’s brand new website and book in a free initial consult to get started. What more could you want than to be surrounded by joy!
